Fix: ImpulseVPS activation stops with an ImpulseCore message

When ImpulseVPS activation stops, or finishes with a note, about ImpulseCore, match the message to one of four cases, fix ImpulseCore, then activate ImpulseVPS.

Last updated 21 days ago

What you're seeing

You clicked Activate for ImpulseVPS under System Settings → Addon Modules, and WHMCS showed one of these:

  • An error that starts with ImpulseVPS activation refused: and talks about ImpulseCore. ImpulseVPS is not activated.
  • A success message that ends with (ImpulseCore is not loaded; install and activate ImpulseCore 1.61.19 or later, then re-activate ImpulseVPS.). ImpulseVPS is activated, but it doesn't work yet.

Why it happens

ImpulseVPS runs on ImpulseCore 1.61.19 or later. ImpulseCore holds its provider credentials and selling locations, its license, its scheduled tasks and its audit log, so ImpulseVPS can't do anything without it.

Before activation sets anything up, it checks ImpulseCore. It reads two versions: the one ImpulseCore's files declare, and the one ImpulseCore recorded for itself the last time it was activated or updated. If ImpulseCore's files are there but it isn't active, or either version is older than 1.61.19, activation stops. (If ImpulseCore isn't installed at all, activation goes ahead without it. See case 4.) No tables are created and nothing is registered, so you can activate again as soon as ImpulseCore is fixed.

Fix

Match your message to one of these four cases.

1. ImpulseCore is older than 1.61.19

The message names the version you have and the version ImpulseVPS needs: the installed ImpulseCore is <version>, and ImpulseVPS needs ImpulseCore 1.61.19 or later.

  1. Upload the current ImpulseCore over your existing one (see Getting the current ImpulseCore below).
  2. Open Addons → ImpulseCore once, so ImpulseCore finishes its own update.
  3. Activate ImpulseVPS.

If ImpulseCore is both too old and not activated, the message says both: the installed ImpulseCore is <version>, it is not activated, .... Upgrade ImpulseCore, activate it, then activate ImpulseVPS.

2. ImpulseCore is uploaded but not activated

This covers an ImpulseCore that was never activated and one that has been deactivated since. The message reads ImpulseCore is installed but not activated, so ImpulseVPS cannot register with it.

  1. Open System Settings → Addon Modules.
  2. Find ImpulseCore and click Activate.
  3. Activate ImpulseVPS.

3. A newer ImpulseCore is uploaded, but its update hasn't run

You uploaded ImpulseCore 1.61.19 or later over a release older than 1.61.19. WHMCS finishes an addon's update the next time that addon's page is opened, so until then ImpulseCore still records the old version. The message names both, for example: ImpulseCore's files are 1.61.26, but ImpulseCore still records 1.48.0 because its own upgrade has not run yet.

  1. Open Addons → ImpulseCore once. This finishes the update.
  2. Activate ImpulseVPS.

4. ImpulseCore isn't installed at all

When there are no ImpulseCore files in modules/addons/impulsecore/, ImpulseVPS activates and creates its tables, but it reports that ImpulseCore isn't loaded and can't register with it. It doesn't work in this state.

  1. Install ImpulseCore 1.61.19 or later and activate it under System Settings → Addon Modules.
  2. Deactivate ImpulseVPS, then activate it again. Deactivating keeps all of ImpulseVPS's data.

Getting the current ImpulseCore

ImpulseCore is free, and every Impulse module needs it. You download it from the Impulse Software portal:

  1. Sign in at www.impulsesoftware.com and open the portal.
  2. On Overview, or on a license's Downloads page, find the ImpulseCore card marked Required — install first. It shows the current release number.
  3. Click Download ImpulseCore.

The card appears while you have an active license.

Extract the ZIP in your WHMCS root, so the files land in modules/addons/impulsecore/. If you extracted it as root, give the folder the same owner as the rest of WHMCS:

chown -R --reference=index.php modules/addons/impulsecore

Then open Addons → ImpulseCore once if it was already active, or activate it under System Settings → Addon Modules if it wasn't. Only then activate ImpulseVPS.

How to confirm it worked

  • Activation shows ImpulseVPS activated. Tables and default settings are ready. Registered with ImpulseCore.
  • In Addons → ImpulseVPS → Dashboard, the System status panel at the bottom has an ImpulseCore row that reads Registered with ImpulseCore (status: active). If that row says ImpulseVPS is not registered, deactivate and activate ImpulseVPS again.
  • Diagnostics → Help → Version info shows your ImpulseCore version next to the version ImpulseVPS needs.
  • ImpulseVPS is listed under ImpulseCore → Modules & Licensing → Modules, and its tasks appear under ImpulseCore → Operations → Cron.

Next, add your IVPS- key in ImpulseCore. See Understanding ImpulseVPS licensing.

Still stuck?

If your message doesn't match any of the four cases, copy its full text and open a ticket from the portal at www.impulsesoftware.com. Once ImpulseVPS is active, Diagnostics → Help also has the support contacts and, with ImpulseCore 1.61.19 or later loaded, a support snapshot that masks secrets, which you can attach to the ticket.
