How to find a customer's server

Where a customer's server shows up in WHMCS and ImpulseVPS: the Customers and Instances tabs, the service's detail page, the WHMCS service page, and the tags that find it at the provider.

Last updated 21 days ago

Every ImpulseVPS service is one server at one provider, and you can reach it from four places: the Customers tab, the Instances tab, the WHMCS service page and the provider account itself. The admin views name the real provider and account, even on products that hide the provider from the customer.

Search the Customers tab

Open Addons → ImpulseVPS → Customers. It lists every service that has a server record, except purged ones (see After the purge below), 25 to a page, newest first. The search box matches part of a hostname or IP address (IPv4 or IPv6), or an exact service or client number.

Each row shows:

  • Instance: the server's hostname, linked to its detail page, with the service number underneath. Hover over the name to see the provider's instance ID.
  • Client, Provider, Region and Plan (the server size).
  • Power and Status. While something is running, Status shows what it is and for how long, for example provisioning · 3m.
  • Public IP: the server's IPv4 address.
  • Actions: the ⋮ menu of server actions.

The service's detail page

Click the hostname, or choose Edit / details from the ⋮ menu. Under the server's status, power state and provider, the record shows:

  • Service: the service and client numbers and the client's name.
  • Instance ID: the provider's own ID for the server.
  • Region: your selling location and, where it differs, the provider's own location code.
  • Plan (with vCPUs, memory and disk when known) and Operating system.
  • IPv4 and IPv6 (when the server has one), each with a copy button.
  • Access mode: how the customer logs in, which is customer_key, generated_key or provider_password.
  • Provider account: the profile key of the account the server lives in.
  • Provisioned: when the server was delivered.
  • Last error: shown only after a failure, such as why setup could not deliver the server.

Below the record are the server actions, then Recent actions: the last 15, with their status, who started them, when, and any error. If the service's last create never confirmed its outcome, a Resolve unknown create panel says exactly what to look for at the provider.

The power state is whatever ImpulseVPS last read from the provider. Use Sync status to read it again before you act on it.

Across the fleet: the Instances tab

Addons → ImpulseVPS → Instances is the operations view. Its cards count servers that are Active, Being set up, Suspended, In grace (terminated and waiting for the purge) and Failed. Filter by provider, region, status or power; Sync status of all filtered reads every server in the view from its provider. The list shows up to 500 servers and has no search box or client column; use Customers for those.

The Orphan report lists servers whose ID ImpulseVPS knows but no service owns, such as a server left by a failed teardown or one whose WHMCS service was deleted. Adopt links one to a service number. Destroy instance deletes it after you type its instance ID.

From the WHMCS service page

In WHMCS, open the client's profile, go to the Products/Services tab and select the service. The fields ImpulseVPS adds there include:

  • Status, Region, Plan and Operating system.
  • Provider: the name, short code and account, for example Vultr (vultr) · account __default__.
  • Instance ID, Hostname, IPv4 and IPv6 (when the server has one).
  • Power state, with when it was last checked, and Access mode.
  • Est. provider cost: the size's monthly cost at the provider, when ImpulseVPS has it.
  • Task history: the last five actions and a View full task history link to the detail page.
  • Operator actions: names the Reboot, Suspend and Unsuspend buttons. It also links to Force purge on the detail page, where you confirm by typing the server's name.

Finding it in the provider account

In the provider's own console, look the server up by the instance ID or IP address from the pages above. Every server ImpulseVPS creates for a service also carries three tags:

  • impulse-vps: ImpulseVPS made it.
  • svc-N: N is the WHMCS service number.
  • client-M: M is the client the service was ordered under.

On Hetzner Cloud these are server labels; on the other three providers they are tags. The server's name depends on the provider:

  • Vultr: the label is impulse-vps-N, and the hostname is set separately.
  • Hetzner Cloud and DigitalOcean: the server's hostname.
  • Linode: the hostname, with every character except letters, digits, - and _ turned into a hyphen.

A customer can rename their server in the client area. That changes the hostname ImpulseVPS shows, but not the name at the provider, so rely on the svc-N tag. A server tagged impulse-vps-diagnostic was made by the Synthetic end-to-end test under Diagnostics → Health Checks, not for a customer.

Starting from the provider instead, for example with an abuse notice? Read the server's svc-N tag, then search that number or the server's IP address in Customers.

After the purge

The purge destroys the server of a terminated service, or of a suspended one whose grace has run out. The service then leaves the Customers and Instances lists. Its WHMCS service page still shows the last record, with status terminated, until you prune old terminated records under Settings → Advanced. To see its history, open Diagnostics → Activity and filter by Service #.
